Date: Sun Aug 20, 2000 6:16pm Dear Lynn in Scotland: I hope you see a different Doctor. My husband's doctor took him off Prozac and substituted Effexor (and Remeron) after a consultation over the phone. My husband was up to 40 milligrams a day of Prozac. His doctor said it would take the effexor "a week to kick in." One week later my husband killed himself. He was not suicidal- when he started the drug (eighteen months earlier) he had been mildly anxious - he was started at 10 milligrams- and for six months he enjoyed a real drug "high." But as the months went on he got more and more depressed- I'm convinced now that his deepening depression was directly connected to the medication. But instead of taking him off the prozac his doctor increased the dosage- 10, 20, 30, 40. There is something really rotten about these anti-depressant drugs. I hope get second, third, fourth opinions before you go back to taking Prozac. My prayers are with you. Jean Date: Wed Aug 30, 2000 3:55pm Thank you for sharing. My husband's suicide note said he couldn't "get the demons out of his head." He never had demons before he started Prozac. Your description of your dreams must have been some of the things he was experiencing- but he just couldn't share with us. We miss our quiet, gentle husband and father. His medicine really did a number on him. Jean Date: Sun Nov 19, 2000 8:48pm Cynthia, I may be the woman you mean. Pat killed himself seven days after his psychiatrist switched him from 40 m. of Prozac to 40 m. of Effexor- plus some dosage of Remeron. -- It wasn't until after his death we discovered you never go off Prozac like that- I've had his condition explained to me that he was a walking molatof cocktail- If I can help I'd be glad to talk to this woman- lucky her, I had no idea of the dangers of these drugs before it happened to us.
